I am a psychology major with a sequence in gender and sexuality studies! Discussing global migration and other issues, Professor Jean-Pierre Murray, who focuses on global governance and international law, warned of a decline in multilateralism and the “liberal international world order” as a result of Trump’s rise. As students at an institution whose mission is to prepare us for thoughtful and productive lives, we have an obligation to be better than the hateful and divisive rhetoric consuming our civic discourse. After class, I asked those same classmates to talk.
Henry Long 2025 Class-Elected Commencement Speech
Addressing that sentiment—in a moment of rare optimism for the night—Professor Taw encouraged students to still pursue such work in the short term and urged them to learn how the system works so they can effect meaningful change later in their careers. During the Q&A portion of the discussion, students conveyed a general sense of unease regarding how a second Trump presidency will impact America’s standing in the world—from its credibility amongst allies to its posture toward international law and human rights. In response to such concerns, Mark Huber, Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, explained that CMC is intentionally constructing the data science major to distinguish it from the computer science major. To determine the major requirements, the faculty committee looked at data science majors at other universities, considered CMC’s resources in statistics, math, and computer science, and examined the guidelines set by the American Statistical Association for data science majors. With plans to hire new professors specializing in data science, CMC currently has the faculty and resources needed to launch a data science major. Lately I’ve found myself thinking about how our class functions, and how us students can build each other up.
On campus, I have been a FYG, an RA for the Lowe Institute, and have taught boxing at Roberts Pavilion. I am an International Relations major and I recently studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. I’m always down to chat and connect with new people, so please don’t hesitate to reach out! Around campus I am a member of the leadership board for the Sexuality and Gender Alliance at CMC and I play on the Women’s Rugby Team! I’m always around campus whether it be studying, chilling at the hub or hanging out and sunbathing with my friends!
- I am an international student from England so community is really important to me!
- I knew I wanted to attend CMC from the second I set foot on campus.
- I’m an Economics and Finance major with a sequence in Data Science here at CMC.
- In my free time, I love to go to the beach, thrift, birdwatch, and of course hang out with friends and meet new people!
- I haven’t declared a major yet but I am thinking of PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics), PPA (Philosophy and Public Affairs), International Relations or some combination of those subjects.
Some will argue that the best response to the vastness of the unknown is to be larger than life, to be greedy, to grab what you can. The universe is bigger and stranger than you could possibly imagine. If any of you have attended convocation over the past four years, you’ve heard it many times before.
CMC is such a tight-knit and special community, and I’m so excited to help continue building a strong, supportive, and fun space in Berger. On campus, I’m involved with SOURCE Nonprofit Consulting and Claremont Women in Business. I look forward to helping build an amazing Berger community alongside Crystal and cannot wait to meet everyone!
More accessible virtual events to accommodate people from all over the world. I have so many ideas for us to connect during this time. I also hope to highlight the diversity that makes our class so great, by spotlighting groups like Mi Gente, BSU, SAGA, APAM and more! During high school, I was a basketball captain, principal string bassist in the orchestra, interned for my Congressman, and founded my school’s first Mental Health Awareness Club. Having graduated high school in China, I’m acutely aware of the importance of bridging cultural and social gaps, and existing alongside each other as full humans. CMC is a place where all of us should feel fully, genuinely and authentically at home.

You can watch a video of his speech above or read a transcript of it below. The class of 2025 elected Henry Long to deliver remarks on their behalf at Claremont McKenna College’s 77th Commencement Ceremony on May 17th, 2025. On campus, I am part of the Claremont Consulting Group and Claremont Accounting Association. Hey everyone, my name is Rakhshaan Adamjee, and I am super excited to be one of the RAs for student apartments! I am looking forward to an amazing year on campus!

- Around campus I am a member of the leadership board for the Sexuality and Gender Alliance at CMC and I play on the Women’s Rugby Team!
- Professor Jessica Zarkin, who teaches courses on Mexican and Latin American politics, noted that Trump would likely use the threat of tariffs as a bargaining chip with Mexico to ensure cooperation on stricter border policies.
- My door is always open, and I’m always available to talk about anything.
- “The capstone is unique in the sense that it offers students a taste of working with an external client on a real-world program and soft skills, such as proper presentation, in addition to analysis skills,” said Batta in an exclusive interview with the Forum.
Introducing the 2025-26 RAs!
Data Science is my major, but I really love cybersecurity. One of my favorite things about CMC is the tight-knit, vibrant community, and as an RA, I’m excited to help keep that spirit of support and fun alive! I love volleyball (intramural team?), K-Pop (any Carats?), Greco-Roman mythology, books, blind boxes, and creative mediums like crochet, stamp carving, and painting! Fostering community motivates me as a Romero Success Coach, CPB’s Vice-President of Creative Programming, and as Club Soda’s Co-President!

I have also retained my childhood love for books, so if you ever want to discuss your latest read or need a fun recommendation, let’s connect! On campus, I’m also a Head Consultant at the CWPD, so you’ll often find me studying/socializing in the writing center. On campus, I’m a Romero Success Coach and a member of the CMS Men’s Basketball Team. I’m a Government major from 20 minutes outside of Chicago, hoping to go to law school in a few years (please reach out if you need pre-law/government advice!). Can’t wait to build a great community in Auen this year.
What You Need to Know About the Soon-to-be-Launched Data Science Major
I’m French-American and majoring in Organizational Studies. A bit about me, I’m a FGLI student from Hawaii PPE + GSS. I am beyond excited to get to know my residents as well and the new faces joining the CMC community! My name is Prateek and I am so excited to be one of your Crown Hall RAs! My favorite food is any preparation of a potato, and I am OBSESSED with Jelly Cats and Squishmallows.
When my peers struggle to acknowledge women and people of color who prioritized a different issue in this election, they dismiss the concerns of millions of minority voters. If working and middle class voters cannot afford groceries, they certainly cannot afford to be single issue voters for social justice. Though the person later sincerely apologized, this episode reflects a broader problem with political discourse in the CMC community. “Perhaps racism and sexism played a role for some voters,” our professor responded.
U.S. Foreign Policy Outlook After the 2024 Election
And so people—I do think the right’s reaction to Mamdani has been a little hysterical. And I also just think, practically speaking, New York is a huge city. So now they’re rallying to Cuomo with some of them, but I don’t have that much sympathy for that. I wish they were a little less, you know, tolerant of certain things—on Israel, and so, against Israel and all that. It’s not the first time, and it’s different from the rest of the country. The following transcript has been edited for length and clarity.

I have a tea-bar cart in my room and would love to share a cup of tea with you if you want to talk about anything. But most of all, I love being around people and creating fun and meaningful spaces — whether that’s for music, deep convos, spontaneous dance parties, or games. I love to cook in Janie’s, go to the farmer’s market, craft a bunch of random things, and yap, so I hope to catch y’all at my open door hours. I love being active on campus and building relationships with my peers by learning about their culture, interests, and experiences!

It’s nerve-racking being a freshman, especially in this pandemic. Thank you all, congratulations, and God bless you all. Your education has led you out, graduation is just a step, and this commencement is just the beginning. Today’s ceremony inaugurates rather than culminates your intellectual journey, and Claremont is a mere Route-66 pit stop on your path towards truth. As you walk the stage, remember that you join in a tradition that spans nine decades here at CMC and ten centuries around the world.

On campus you’ll find me locking in at The Hub with a coffee (I can only focus amid chaos) or strutting around campus as if it’s my personal runway. Whether you’re looking to lose a game of cornhole or Catan, camp out at J-Tree or hike Baldy, or just need someone to talk to, I’m always happy to hang out. I’m always available to talk, and I look forward to meeting everyone! On campus, I am a part of Ballet Folklorico de Claremont, 5C Pasifika Student Association, the Athenaeum, and CMC cmc markets review EcoReps.
